Parents can teach children to read

We live in one of the most affluent and technologically advanced nations on earth. We have 'free' compulsory education, strict teacher qualification requirements, and government resources dedicated to education.

However, our literacy levels still remain lower than many other countries. The schooling system cannot be entirely blamed on low literacy levels; many parents could do more to teach pre-reading skills and therefore improve reading success.

Parents are the first teachers

Language skills, pre-reading and pre-writing skills are learnt before the age of four years. Therefore preparing children to learn to read can be achieved in the home, before children attend a formal school setting.

Preparing children to read always begin at home, as parents are the child's first educators. Educational researchers have found that important aspects of academic learning are most often learnt in the home rather than in a formal school setting. Ideally, teaching children to read successfully is the combined efforts of both parents and professional teachers.

Parents can teach reading

Mother and two daughters - Improve readingParents teach their kids to talk, it is only natural that they should teach them to read as well. To teach a child to read successfully sets that child on the road to academic success.

Parents, can teach basic reading skills. Parents know their children best and they are natural educators. Children are born learners, and they can learn to read successfully before they attend formal schooling.

Parents do not need a teaching qualification before they can effectively teach reading. Learning to read can be taught in fun activities within the home. There is no need to sit children in front of a computer or television to teach reading skills. Interacting with children using fun word games can teach reading skills in an enjoyable way for both children and parents.

Parents can provide one on one instruction for children, and daily reinforcement to develop children's reading skills, in a classroom teachers often have over twenty children to teach. Here is a link to a step by step program that parents can use to teach their child to read successfully.

All parents can teach children to read before they attend school. Reading skills are a gift your child will carry with them for life.
